Ben Leong seized the halfway lead of the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour’s Impian Closed Championship in Kajang today.
The 30-year-old from Sabah fired a five-under 67 to lead the RM180,000 tournament at Impian Golf & Country Club by stroke with a 136 total.
Leong, who played impressively and flawlessly until near the end of his second, moved to eight-under and had a one-stroke cushion over a two-way tie for second place.
Shaifubari Muda, the overnight who had a 67 of his own yesterday, managed a two-under 70 today and was joined on 137 by Lam Yu Shuen, who carded 69.
On another good day for going low, Iylia Jamil shot the best of lot when he returned with a six-under 66, and Kemarol Baharin signed for a 67. They were joint fourth on six-under 138.
Veteran P. Gunasagaran was sixth on five-under 139, another shot back.
The top-22 players were all par or better on a course that continues to make it look easy for the top pros.
Meanwhile, Leong said he was happy with how he played despite giving shots back with bogeys at the 16th and 18th holes.
“I think I just lost a bit of concentration towards the end,” he said. “Otherwise I played quite solid. I hit the ball well and putted well too.
“But that’s how golf is sometimes… it like a case of up-and-down. Hopefully I can learn from this and not repeat the same thing tomorrow,” added Leong.
Leong was six-under after 11 holes. After four more pars came the bogeys at the 16th and 18th that were punctuated with a birdie-four at the 17th hole.
Iylia said he did not expect to go so low.
“I wasn’t thinking of a 66,” he said. “I thought I would just go out there and enjoy myself while giving it my best shot. And then all of a sudden the putts started to drop.
“And once I found my rhythm it was a matter of just staying focused on the job.”
Iylia actually start bogey-par-eagle-bogey, before steadying the ship and adding another six birdies to his card.
