Sherwood seizes lead at halfway stage
Nick Sherwood followed up his strong opening round with a four-under 68 today that took him to the top of the leaderboard at the halfway stage of the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Penang Championship today.
The American carved out a one-stroke lead after the second round of the RM200,000 tournament at Penang Golf Club, which is co-sanctioned with the Asian Development Tour.
Sherwood was on 10-under 134 for the first two days, following his 66 yesterday.
A double-bogey 6 at the par-4 2nd hole was immediately followed by an eagle-three at the 3rd hole. And birdies at 6th, 9th, 11th and 17th holes left the player seeking a first victory in Malaysia in a good place.
Speaking after his round, Sherwood said: “My plan was to try and stay focused within myself, both physically and mentally. And I feel I did that.
“The eagle on the 3rd was really welcome as it gave me a huge momentum boost. I had a double bogey on the 2nd but I told myself to be patient and then to get the two shots right back on the next was just great.”
Australian Adam Blyth carded a 70 that left him in second spot on 135, while Thailand’s Wisut Artjanawat shot a blistering seven-under 65 to claim third place, another shot back on eight-under-par 136.
There was a three-way tie for forth place where Pavit Tangkamolprasert (67) of Thailand, Sweden’s Oscar Zetterwall (68) and overnight leader American John Michael O'Toole (73) were matched on 137.
K. P. Lin (71) of Chinese Taipei was eight on 138, while M. Sasidaran’s 70 had joint eighth on five-under 139, alongside Thailand’s Pasamet Pogamnerd (72).
