Short game master-Fung Takes halfway stage lead at Kinrara

Nicholas Fung seized the lead of the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour’s RM180,000 I&P Group Closed Championship at Kinrara Golf Club in Puchong today.

Fresh from his exploits in the EurAsia Cup last weekend, Fung shot a one-under 69 to move to a six-under 134 total and one-stroke lead at the halfway stage.

On a tight leaderboard, Lim Eng Seng (67), Muhammad Alwarith Damian (69) and Sukree Othman (70) were joint second. The trio climbed to 135 and were two shots in front of Wilson Choo Zhe Ming (66), S. Murthy (67) and Kemarol Baharin (68).

Choo’s four-under was the low round of the day and a deserved one. Starting on the back nine he struggled somewhat, with two bogeys before getting the shots back with birdies at the 16th and 17th holes.

That even-par nine was followed up by a run of four-under over the front nine and it left him to observe: “I bounced back after a tough start.
“Birdies at the 3rd and 5th holes came before the eagle on the 7th. There I hit a good drive and good second shot which finished up just off the green. From there I used the putter and it rolled in.
“That was a stead nine. But I built up momentum from the birdies at 16 and 17.”
Another two strokes back were Lam Yu Shuen (69), Mior Asyraf Haziq (69), M. Sasidaran (70), Kim Leun Kwang (72) and Kenneth De Silva (73) on one-under 139.
