Nachimuthu takes first round lead at Danau
Tour veteran R. Nachimuthu started the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Danau Closed Championship II at Danau Golf Club in Bangi, Selangor today with four-under 68.

That effort gave him a two-stroke lead after the first round of the RM180,000 tournament that features the Tour’s leading players, minus the top-three – Danny Chia, Arie Irawan and Ben Leong, who are in this week’s US PGA Tour-sanctioned CIMB Classic at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club.
Nachimuthu’s opening day was highlighted by an eagle-three on the par-5 12th and a run of three consecutive birdies from Hole No. 2. He had another three birdies at 9th, 10th and 18th holes, countered by four bogeys – two on each nine.
Speaking of his up-and-down round Nachimuthu said he was still happy with it went despite the rain interruption that came before the two bogeys at the end – Holes 16 and 17.
“I birdied the last and that was after the two bogeys which came when we restarted,” said multiple Tour winner Nachimuthu.
A tweaked swing is the reason behind his recent change in fortunes, Nachimuthu added.
“Coming into the tournament I worked on my swing and now feel comfortable inside 100 metres. That gave me a chance at several birdies as I hit the ball close (to the flag).”
“Of course I also made a few mistakes but at the end of it all, I finished four-under, so I am happy with how it went,” said Nachmuthu.
There was a three-way tie for second place when Airil Rizman, S. Murthy and Shaifubari Muda, who carded a 64 in the Kinrara Championship last week, returned with matching 70s.
Shaaban Hussin, who finished in the top-three last week, Lam Yu Shuen, Keegan Kam and Muhammad Alwarith Damian, who himself has been in good nick of late, were joint fifth on one-under 71.
