Shaaban, Sukree make their move at Kinrara

There was a good shake up at the top of the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour’s RM200,000 Kinrara Championship today when multiple winners Shaaban Hussin and Sukree Othman played themselves into contention to give Malaysia a good chance securing yet another one of the co-sanctioned tournaments. Shaaban shot a four-under 66, while Sukree made his move with a 67.

The local duo was tied on five-under 135 after the second round, which was just one stroke behind Thailand’s Poom Saksansin. Poom carded a 67 to climb to 134 and take the lead in an event that has been reduced to three rounds after the first day was abandoned because of the haze.

The tournament, co-sanctioned with the Asian Development Tour, also carries world ranking points.

Thailand’s presence in the event was felt further after Ronnachai Jamnong (69) and Pijit Petchkasem (65) moved into joint fourth on four-under 136, alongside Filipino Mars Pucay (68) and American Josh Salah (68).

Malaysians Zamri Sariff (66) and Irfan Yusoff (67) were tied for eighth on 137 with Sweden’s Malcolm Kokocinski (67), Australian Jordan Sherratt (67), Chanat Sakulpolphaisan (69) of Thailand and Japan’s Masaru Takahashi (69).

The low round of the day and tournament came from Shaifubari Muda, who posted a six-under 64. That effort took him to tie for 19th on 139 and came after he opened with an uncharacteristic 75.

“Today things were very different,” said Shaifubari, “I hit the ball with feeling. Yesterday I had no rhythm but somehow it came back today. I also putted better today.”
“Hopefully I can do the same tomorrow,” said Shaifubari, who is seeking a ninth pro title and his first on the PGM tour since Harvard in 2012.

“If I can keep this going I should be able to finish in a reasonably good position. That is the best I can hope for after my opening round yesterday, which did not go according to plan.”
