MALAYSIA’S top-ranked Nicholas Fung won the RM150,000 PGM I&P Group Championship at Kinrara Golf Club today, setting a new course record and equaling his career low round.

Nicholas, the PGM Tour’s Player of the Year, shot a nine-under 62 in the final round to finish with a 265 total and win by a massive 11 strokes from a three-way tie.

Joint second on 276 were Arie Fauzi (72), Khor Kheng Hwai (67) and Sukree Othman, who carded a last day five-under 66.

Shaaban Hussin also fired a 66 to end up tied with Airil Rizman (71) and R. Nachimuthu (69) on six-under 278.

Iylia Jamil (68) was eighth with a 279, while Kemarol Baharin (68) and Rahizam Ramli (69) were joint ninth at four-under-par.

Among the best performances yet in its three-odd years of existence, Nicholas’ showing lit up the Tour with a superlative display of measured discipline and controlled aggression. Indeed, this round was one of the best by any Malaysian and any time in the sport’s history here and reinforced his position as the country’s leading light by a long shot.

Nicholas picked up a cheque worth RM25,200 for the victory to take his seasonal earnings to RM110,465 and increase his lead on the Order of Merit over Nachimuthu to more than RM28,000.  He was also rewarded with an additional RM5,000 by the Kinrara Golf Club for being the new Course Record Holder.

“I am really happy with my performance,” said Nicholas, who started the final round just a stroke ahead of Arie. “I played solid golf and with the course record and equaling my career best round of nine-under, it has been a great week for me.”

The top-ranked Malaysian in the world standings, which has earned him an automatic slot in the US PGA Tour sanctioned-CIMB Classic at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club in October, Nicholas said he has not done anything different in recent weeks, apart from working hard in training.

“I have not changed anything. But I do practice a lot to improve my game,” he added.

For his part Arie said he was a bit disappointed that he did not putt as well as he might have to give himself a better shot at the title. Graciously in defeat, he added that “Nicholas has been winning for some time now, so it’s difficult to get past him.

“But I know I can match these top players,” said the rookie who only turned pro in the second quarter of this year. “The thing I have to keep on doing is give myself chances by contending and hopefully it will eventually come right.”

PGM Tour chairman, Tun Ahmad Sarji, congratulated the players for a “tournament that was made interesting by some excellent play”, and in particular, Nicholas’ tearing apart the field in the final round.

“It’s good for golf that our players are continuing to improve and this tournament is a good example of this,” said Tun Sarji.

“We are now into the second half of our season and we can all see the continued progress being made, so we must be happy with that and look for ways to do even better,” added Tun Sarji

The next event on the PGM Tour’s schedule is the PGM Terengganu Masters (ADT) at Resorts World Kijal in Kemaman, Terengganu from Wednesday to Saturday (Aug 21-24).

DAY ONE

PINT SIZE NICHOLAS -64 PROVES THE SKILLFUL SHORT GAME IS INDEED the GAME MAKER
HIS MASTERY SKILLS OF PLACING THAT BALL BY THE PIN TO PUT GAVE HIM THIS UNMATCHABLE SCORE OF 64.
To improves skills- chip, pitch and putting part of the game golfers can use any limited space  near residence without having to travel miles to play a game. Few hours  a day will be much more constructive than using hours to play a game daily miles away. By playing any  where near gives ample opportunity to ingrain the feel of touch required to place the ball by the pin.
A  lesson to all golfers at any level. As witnessed on day one at PGM EVENT at Kinara there are many golfers  with nice to look at swings ( a contrast to PGTI EVENT where swings are not nice but score are good) who are good at long game getting on regulation or by the green. The play there after is widely different to the expectations, giving different scores.

At any level of the game is the game within 130  yard than widen the score diffre4nces. Then why the need to spend hors playing going around course when feel game can need to be improved first.  With certainty short game improvement will result in a much better long  game.

Nicholas is on top of the PGM Tour Money List with  RM 85000,26.He is  the Malaysian number one.

With a round as solid as this today, it was no surprise to hear Nicholas say: "Everything just worked wonderfully well. I hit the ball really good today and I putted well too. This round was a compact one that felt very good and I am very happy with how in turned out.

“Hopefully, I can continue with a solid showing throughout the four days here at Kinrara. If I can do that, then I think I have a decent chance of finishing up the standings," added the Sabah lad.

Nicholas shot a five-under 30 over the front nine and came home with a two-under 34 in a performance that saw him birdie nine holes, with two bogeys on the card.

R. Nachimuthu, who trails Nicholas by less than RM10,000 on the PGM Tour’s Order of Merit, signed for a five-under 66 that had him second on the leaderboard, while Kenneth Tobuse’s 68 was good enough for third place.

There was a five-way tie for fourth, where Shaifubari Muda, Kemarol Baharin, Airil Rizman, Daniel Ng and Rahizam Ramli were bunched on two-under 69, with Khor Kheng Hwai, Keegan Kam, Rashid Ismail, Chien Tan, Zen Dharmaratne and Abd Samat Abu joint ninth on 70.

The first day’s action at Kinrara was also highlighted by a hole-in-one from C.M. Chong. The veteran pro struck the perfect shot at the par-3 3rd hole, as the ball sailed directly into the cup from 138 metres.

The ace appeared to do wonders for Chong, as he closed out his round with four successive birdies to finish on even-par 71.

Speaking afterwards, he said: “I’m pleased with the hole-in-one as it helped me get back into the game, given that I was three-over at the time. And to finish the round with four consecutive birdies was really good.”

a note by damaru golf --Kinara  golf club is a public golf course.  PGM tour players have free playing facilities but requires hiring  buggy.  buggy  play does not test the cool temperament needed under stressful  physical condition.BUGGY S ARE FOR PARAPLEGICS
Perhaps Kinara should set the example to all golf clubs in malaysia to allow PGM  Card holders to walk.A sure  FOC avenue to improve performance.

Damaru had  time to speak to the mother of young impressive  promising  15 year old  golfer, who said there will be quite a number of drop outs from the already shrinking numbers in the tour As the costs are not withing reach. Her father a businessman is currently financing the kid who dropped out of school with  five credits in O Level to play professional golf. Now earning less than what he could have earned as a counter salesman.   She went further to stress  Malaysia does not have Companies like  found in Thailand who are very supportive of promising sportsman at every stage or progress. Result is  there  company's are adored by the public.
