Chien Wins Peneng Satellite Event
Twelve-year-old Bryan beaten in a five-hole PGM Tour playoff
IT took a five-hole playoff to determine the winner of the PGM Tour’s Penang Satellite event today, and at the end of it all, Chien Hau Tan came through at the expense of 12-year-old Bryan Teoh.

On a tense and exciting third and final day at Penang Golf Resort, both players finished on 2-over 218, which then led to the sudden death playoff. After four pars apiece on the 18th, Chien birdied the hole to clinch the crown.

He fired a final round even-par 72, while Bryan, who held the overnight lead, carded one-over 73.

Kevin Ian Chee, who ensured that amateur players filled the three top spots, also managed a 72, as he finished two strokes off the pace, while Johari Mansor had a 75 that gave him fourth spot on 221. Johnny Tan (76) was fifth on 230.

Twenty-two year-old Chien, who plays off scratch and only recently returned to Malaysia after studying for a degree in Sports Management in Iowa, US, where he played four years collegiate golf, said he would be turning pro now and will focus on playing the PGM Tour full-time.

The top five spots on the leaderboard get a year’s exemption to the Tour full-time.

“I will also focus on preparing myself for the Asian Tour Q-School next January,” said Chien, who added that his father had the most influence on him taking the sport.

“I started golf when I was 12 years. And today I am very happy to have won this PGM tournament. It is for my father, as well as for me,” he said.

So far as the tournament itself went, Chien said he found the conditions rather different to those experienced in the States, but all the same, enjoyed it.

Bryan mother’s Amy, said that while the Form One student from Penang’s Jit Sing High School finished runner-up, they were more than happy.

“We really didn’t expect Bryan to come this far to start with, so, while he missed out on the title in a playoff, we are pleased with his overall performance. He came into the tournament seeking exposure and with no expectations of winning. So, for him to come so close (having led or shared the lead in the first two rounds) is really something of a bonus.”

Await Damaru golf Malaysia covering of next event -on the PGM Tour is the UMW Templer Park Masters at Templer Park Country Club in Rawang from June 26-29. The event is co-sanction by the Asian Development Tour and carries world ranking points.
