A  four-shot victory FOR   Mardan Wins A’Famosa Masters

MARDAN Mamat won the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) PGM ASEAN A’Famosa Masters Tour by four strokes at the A’Famosa Golf Resort in Alor Gajah, Melaka today. The Singaporean shot a final round two-under 70 for a 15-under 273 total.

Malaysia’s Khor Kheng Hwai carded a last day three-under to finish runner-up on 277, while his compatriot R. Nachimuthu (73) and Thailand’s Ratchapol Jantavara were tied for third place on 281.

Mohd Rizal Amin’s 71 was enough to secure him fifth spot on 282, ahead of a four-way tie for sixth place, where all of Kenneth De Silva (70), Iylia Jamil (72), S. Murthy (73) and Airil Rizman (73) were bunched on five-under 283.

Mardan’s game plan to see out the final day with as little waywardness as possible went to cue and he duly wrapped-up the tournament with a deserved triumph.

Going into the last round with a five-stroke lead, the Singapore World Cup player birdied the second hole and dropped a shot at the par-4 5th hole, before bouncing back with a birdie at No. 7. He gave away a double-bogey six at the 10th, but then ran off birdies at the 13th, 17th and 18th holes to comfortably win yet again.

“I played today just as I would have liked to,” said Mardan accepting the trophy from Tun Ahmad Sarji, the PGM Tour Chairman. “The course seemed to play a bit more difficult today and maybe that was because of the pin-placements. But overall, it went to plan and I’m just happy to have got the win.”

Mardan’s victory in the event that is co-sanctioned with the Asean PGA (Professional Golf Association), sets him up nicely for a return to Malaysia next month for the Selangor Masters.

“I’m looking forward to coming back here (to Malaysia) for the Selangor Masters,” he said.

For 29-year-old Khor, this was his best finish yet and he said he was more than pleased with the outcome.

“I’ve been improving all-round over the last few weeks and to get a second place here is good for me,” said Khor. “Hopefully I can use this to make more inroads in finishing up the leaderboards more often.

Tun Sarji said the PGM Tour was happy that it continued to grow and noted that the fields were also getting “stronger and stronger”.

“Working with organisations like the Asean Tour is good for Malaysian golf as our circuit really gets a lift in events like this,” said Tun Sarji. “You can see the quality of the fields is much stronger than they used to be and I believe it will only get better as time goes on.”

The PGM Tour’s next stop is the Satellite Tour Q-School at Impian Golf & Country Club in Kajang, Selangor from May 21-23, followed by the PGM Kelantan Classic at Kelantan Golf & Country Club in Kota Bharu, Kelantan from May 27-30.
