NORTHPORT INCREASES PGM TOUR SPONSORSHIP
Kuala Lumpur – Northport has increased the prize money of its PGM (Professional Golf of Malaysia) Tour event by more than fifty percent, taking this year’s purse to RM200,000.
In all, the port authority has underwritten this season’s PGM Northport Glenmarie Masters to the tune of RM250,000.
Set to be played from March 6-9 at Glenmarie Golf & Country Club in Shah Alam, Selangor, the event is co-sanctioned by the Asian Development Tour (ADT) and carries world ranking points.
Both the PGM CCM Rahman Putra Masters and PGM Sime Darby Harvard Masters proved huge successes with their ADT co-sanctioned status. The former was won by Scotland’s James Byrne at Rahman Putra last month and the latter by American James Bowen at Harvard last week.
In a statement, PGM Chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji bin Abdul Hamid said : “This is the second year that Northport have sponsored this tournament and it is indeed most welcome. This shows that Northport continues to show confidence in our burgeoning Tour and we hope that other companies will show similar example to boost the game of golf in the country”.
“This is a valuable and appreciated way for them to illustrate their corporate social responsibilities (CSR) to the development of Malaysian sport”.
The PGM Tour Chairman added: “As a non-profit organisation, we have two main objectives – to provide a platform for Malaysian professional golfers to earn a living and more importantly that PGM Tour serve as an avenue for young golfing amateurs and professionals to excel in the sport and embark on a journey of success while playing on the Asian Tour and European Tour circuits.”
Meanwhile, Northport Director Dato’ Abdul Samad Mohamed pointed out that Northport had made it their duty to support the PGM’s various programmes, including the Tour.
“After evaluating the comprehensive and long-term plans of the PGM, which focuses on the benefits of both the professional golfers as well as the young up-and-coming players, Northport has taken on board a devotion to help develop Malaysian golf.
“The many (33) tournaments that the PGM Tour has scheduled for 2013 is evidence of their commitment to this ideal, which in turn is a crucial platform to give both established and new golfers a better chance of succeeding on the international stage.
“This is idyllic Malaysian foresight and something that Northport admires and supports fully,” added Dato’ Samad.
